Now that the schools have broken up and the children are home, finding fun activities to keep them entertained – whether you’re a parent or grandparent – can be a real challenge. Luckily, North Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion are packed with fantastic family-friendly things to do, many of which are just a short car journey from our Newport and Dinas Cross Caravan Parks at Matthew Baker Caravans. We’ve even included some educational options so children can keep learning while enjoying their summer break. Our guide will help you make the most of the season – and ensure you don’t miss out on the fun and memories waiting to be made.
Agriculture Shows
The first type of event on this list is the annual agricultural shows, which take place around the county in the summer months. This could be the perfect day out for you and your children or grandchildren, as it will teach them about Wales’ rich agricultural industry.
Cardigan County Show
The next show taking place is the Cardigan County Show, which is the day after the Fishguard Show on the 2nd of August. This event is located closer to our Newport site, being roughly 20 minutes away by car in the neighbouring county of Ceredigion.
Like the Fishguard Show, this brilliant day out will show you the very best that our local farmers have to offer. From dog shows and livestock judging to demonstrations from the fire brigade and funfair rides, there is something to entertain the whole family at the Cardigan Show.
Nevern Show
Nevern Show is another great agricultural show, taking place in the middle of August on the 13th. This is located even closer to our Newport caravan park, just down the road near the village of Nevern.
The Nevern Show is a family-friendly event with entertainment and a warm rural atmosphere. There will be livestock classes, equine events, agricultural competitions, and a variety of other activities and attractions.
Other Events and Shows
There are plenty of other shows taking place this summer in North Pembrokeshire apart from agrucultural shows. Take a look at just some we have picked.
Cardigan River & Food Festival
For food lovers, Cardigan River & Food Festival could be an unmissable event. On Saturday the 16th August, from 10 am until 5 pm, there will be a celebration of cuisine by the riverside in Cardigan. This event will include cookery demos, river races (which will include the traditional Welsh coracle boats), live music, and children’s activities. This could be a great opportunity to sample some of the delicious dishes on offer whilst enjoying the entertainment.
Fishguard Carnival
Many of us will have fond memories of the joyful atmosphere at local carnivals during the summer holidays. Now you can recreate those memories with your children at the Fishguard Carnival. This event benefits from no entry fees as it is a parade through the streets of Goodwick, where people will wear fancy dress and decorate floats to spread cheer whilst raising money for charity. Why not even join the parade by registering a float and wearing a costume? Don’t miss this vibrant event on the 23rd of August.
AberJazz Festival
For music lovers, the AberJazz Festival will be taking place from August 21st until the 25th and will feature a family-friendly series of jazz concerts all over Fishguard and nearby villages. This year will be the long-standing blues festival’s 22nd year, bringing a unique lineup of jazz and blues music every year. The emphasis of this show is to celebrate homegrown Welsh talent. This is perfect for couples or families with children who enjoy live music.

Boat Trips
Another type of activity that we think will make an unforgettable day out is boat trips and tourers. Thanks to our beautiful coastline, rich wildlife and the local tradition of sailing, there are plenty of businesses which specialise on showing you the unique views of Northern Pembrokeshire from the sea.
Dolphin Spotting Boat Trips
One notable tour that we think would be a spectacular day out is the Dolphin Spotting Boat Trips that run from New Quay. This is further away than the previous activities on the list, at nearly an hour away by car from our Newport caravan park but we think it is well worth the trip. This is a truly magical experience that people travel all over the world to see. You also might see marine life of all kinds, like seals, seabirds, dolphins, and more. They offer scheduled trips of one hour, one hour 30 minutes and 2 hours in duration.
Activity Parks
Activity Parks can offer a great day out for families and couples alike as they tend to be open regularly throughout the summer so you can attend at any time if you have a busy schedule.
Shire Horse Farm
Dyfed Shire Horse Farm is beautifully located in Carnhuan, Eglwyswrw, Pembrokeshire — perfectly positioned between the rolling Preseli Hills and the breathtaking coastline of North Pembrokeshire and Newport Bay. It’s a peaceful and scenic spot, ideal for a relaxing countryside escape.
A visit to the farm offers a unique opportunity to step into the rhythm of traditional Welsh farming life. Wander through wide open spaces, meet our gentle and majestic Shire horses, and soak up the charm of a working family-run farm that’s proud of its heritage.
Whether you’re looking to reconnect with nature, introduce the kids to farm life, or simply enjoy a slower pace surrounded by stunning Welsh countryside, the Dyfed Shire Horse Farm welcomes you with open arms.
Castell Henllys
One we think would be great fun for children, as well as educational, is Castell Henllys Iron Age Village. Here you will get to see our Celtic History with a recreation of a prehistoric village and it’s friendly inhabitants to educate you on how life was 2,000 years ago. Located near the town of Crymych, this prehistoric village is set in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park so it is the perfect way to disconnect from everyday life and embrace the beautiful natural environment around us.
Overall there are plenty of activities, events and things to do this summer in North Pembrokeshire. These are on top of the amazing attractions on our doorsteps like our stunning beaches and the Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park coastal path. We hope you have a summer to remember!
