Explore North Pembrokeshire’s Coastline

Newgale Beach

Stretching for over two miles along the west coast, Newgale is one of the most popular beaches in North Pembrokeshire during half term. The huge sandy beach is ideal for family beach games, long coastal walks, surfing and bodyboarding, with plenty of room even during busy weekends.

Newgale beach is particularly popular with surfers thanks to its consistent waves, while the surrounding Pembrokeshire Coast Path offers incredible sea views in both directions. On sunny evenings, Newgale becomes one of the best places in the county to watch the sunset, often filled with vibrant colours as the sun slowly sets in the distance.

St David's - The Smallest City in Britain

At short drive from Newgale Beach is St Davids, Britain’s smallest city and one of the most beautiful places in West Wales. Surrounded by dramatic coastline, sandy coves and rolling countryside, St Davids offers the perfect mix of outdoor adventure, independent shopping and relaxed cafés.

Visitors can explore the stunning St Davids Cathedral, wander through the ruins of the Bishop’s Palace and enjoy coastal walks nearby around Whitesands, Caerfai and St Non’s. Boat trips also run from nearby St Justinian’s, offering opportunities to spot puffins, seals and dolphins around Ramsey, and some of the other Pembrokeshire islands, during late spring.

The city itself is packed with independent businesses, galleries and cafés perfect for a relaxed afternoon. Popular stops include The Really Wild Emporium for locally inspired food and coffee, MamGu Welshcakes for fresh Welshcakes and sweet treats, and Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre which combines exhibitions, local art and information about the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

Whether you’re browsing gift shops, enjoying lunch in a café courtyard or heading out along the coast path, St Davids is one of the best places to spend a day during May half term in Pembrokeshire.

Seabirds Discovery Day in St Davids

Nature lovers visiting Pembrokeshire during half term won’t want to miss Seabirds Discovery Day on Thursday 28th May at Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre. The event shines a spotlight on the incredible wildlife found along the Pembrokeshire coast, with expert talks, guided walks, live demonstrations and family-friendly activities taking place throughout the day.

Visitors will be able to learn more about puffins, Skomer Island and marine conservation from National Park Rangers and former seabird wardens, while younger visitors can get involved with hands-on workshops and creative activities. There will also be live demonstrations from specially trained biosecurity detection dogs helping protect Wales’ seabird islands, alongside wildlife displays, local stalls and interactive exhibits around the centre.

Solva

Solva, quoted as ‘The Prettiest Village in Wales’ in the Daily Express, is one of the most picturesque villages in Pembrokeshire and a perfect place to spend a relaxed afternoon during half term. Built around a beautiful natural harbour, Solva is packed with colourful cottages, independent galleries, cafés and coastal views at every turn.

Visitors can enjoy crabbing along the harbour wall, launch kayaks and paddleboards from the water’s edge or simply take in the scenery while walking along the estuary.

Families visiting Solva can also stop by the lovely children’s play park tucked away beneath the trees behind Hats & Barrels. To find it, head into the main harbour car park and take the left-hand path just after the pub. After a short walk of around 10 to 20 metres, the park comes into view, offering a great little spot for younger children to burn off some extra energy while parents relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

There are also several lovely sections of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Solva, with spectacular walks leading towards St Davids and dramatic cliffside viewpoints nearby.

With fresh seafood, local art shops and a laid-back atmosphere, Solva remains one of the hidden gems of the Pembrokeshire coastline.

Wednesday 27 May, 2.30pm

Head to Carew Castle & Tidal Mill to witness the launch of its giant medieval trebuchet, an enormous siege engine once used to attack castles, forts and fortified towns hundreds of years ago. Watch this incredible piece of medieval engineering spring into action as massive projectiles are launched across the castle grounds, demonstrating the astonishing power these machines once held during warfare.

Visitors can also learn more about how trebuchets were used throughout history, from hurling huge stones capable of breaking through castle walls to launching burning materials and other fearsome siege tactics used during medieval battles.

Perfect for families and history lovers alike, the event promises a fun, educational and unforgettable day out during half term.

Castles, Battles & Knight School

Throughout Pembrokeshire are a number of incredible castles, which put on activities every school holiday!

This half term, Pembroke Castle is hosting a packed programme of family-friendly activities and medieval adventures. Visitors can step into the world of knights and legends with interactive Knight School sessions, dragon-themed experiences, live falconry displays and historical entertainment taking place throughout the castle grounds.

With its towering stone walls, hidden caves and stunning setting overlooking the mill pond, Pembroke Castle offers the perfect mix of history, exploration and hands-on fun for families during the school holidays.

Whether you’re planning beach days along the Pembrokeshire coast, exploring castles and hidden harbours, spotting puffins around St Davids or enjoying family attractions across the county, there’s no shortage of adventures to enjoy this May half term.
With longer days, warmer weather, and so many places to visit, it’s the perfect time to explore everything Pembrokeshire has to offer and create some unforgettable family memories along the way.
