Pembrokeshire is a county renowned for its rich fishing heritage, with our stunning coastline and rivers providing plenty of opportunity for fresh catches. Generations of local fishermen have cast their nets into our rich waters to reel in mackerel, bass, lobster, crab and much more. It’s no surprise that our location continues to be popular with fishermen to this day, which means that the local restaurants have a plentiful supply of local produce to put on our plates. There are many notable seafood restaurants across the county, with a good selection being in north Pembrokeshire, just a stone’s throw from our parks at Matthew Baker Caravans. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite restaurants that are a seafood lover’s delight.

Sailors’ Safety

The first location on our list is Sailors’ Safety, which is located just a short drive or a 30-minute walk from our Dinas Cross caravan park, and slightly further away to our Newport park.

The building used to be an old smuggler’s pub, which dates back to the late 16th century. The exterior is a step back in time with its stone walls, which are in harmony with the coastline, which in itself is a view to behold. The restaurant has indoor seating as well as benches outside, so you can fully admire the view of Pwllgwaelod Beach and coastline over a cold drink.

But where this restaurant really shines is the menu. Serve a great range of fish, ranging from crab, lobster and prawns to trout, mackerel, sea bass and much more.

The Yacht Club Cafe, Fishguard

Another location we recommend is The Yacht Club Cafe in Fishguard, which is a short car journey away from our Dinas Cross caravan park. Fishguard is renowned for it’s rich fishing heritage, which makes this cafe in the perfect place to make delicious meals from fresh catches.

Located on the quay (or the old harbour) in Lower Fishguard, The Yacht Club serves fresh crab, lobster, a wide variety of fish and vegetarian quiche. They also specialise in sweet treats for afters like homemade cake and even delicious local ice cream.

Tides Kitchen & Wine Bar

The next location on our list that we would recommend for any seafood lovers to visit is Tides Kitchen & Wine Bar, in the town of Newport. Due to it’s proximity to the River Nevern Estuary, it has calm, brackish waters ideal for species like flounder, bass, and mullet, making it an ideal fishing spot. Just up the hill is our Newport Bay Caravan Parklands, from which you can see the estuary.

Where Tides and Kitchen & Wine Bar is different from the other locations on our list is that they combine freshly caught fish with vegetables which they grow themselves in the garden. So this is accompanied with vegetables means that fresh, healthy and organic dishes are their signature.

Lobster And Môr

The next couple of locations on our list are closer to our Newgale caravan park, with the first being Lobster And Môr. Located in the beautiful fishing village of Little Haven in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, they offer local produce with an emphasis on shellfish.

The shellfish used on their menu is caught locally, with their delicious crab sandwiches being one of their most popular takeaway meals. Because their food is so fresh and they rely on only locally sourced fish, everything is subject to availability. So, because they don’t buy in from overseas, they help support the local fishing industry.

A unique feature of Lobster and Môr is that they will sell you the live catch of the day from their aquarium to cook to your own preference. They also sell a range of spirits made from seaweed as well as clothing, and even a ‘Fisherman’s blend’ coffee!

The Shed

The final restaurant on our list, which is located around a 20-minute car journey from our Newgale caravan park, is The Shed in Porthgain. Porthgain is a small hamlet located between St David’s and Goodwick, which is best known for its picturesque small harbour. The Shed is located right on the harbour, making this a great spot for a meal with a view.

This informal fish bistro serves daily catches which come up from the harbour directly opposite, making their food arguably the shortest-travelled. They are best known for their fish and chips but they also serve à la carte specials and freshly prepared desserts as well as a carefully selected list of wines, beers and beverages.

Those were our picks for the best seafood restaurants, which are just a short journey away from our parks at Matthew Baker Caravans. Pembrokeshire also has outstanding offerings in the south of the county for you to try. We love supporting other local businesses, and we think that our food industry is important to keep alive for future generations.
