The Best Winter Surfing Beaches in North Pembrokeshire

Winter is arriving in Pembrokeshire, and with it comes a whole new kind of magic along our coastline. The Atlantic swells begin to build, the beaches fall quiet, and the surf scene comes into its own.

It’s the perfect time to wrap up warm, grab your board, and experience the thrill of winter surfing just moments from our caravan parks at Newgale, Dinas, and Newport.

Whether you’re chasing your next big wave or simply want to watch the action with a hot drink in hand, here’s our guide to the best winter surfing beaches in North Pembrokeshire.

Whitesands Bay, St Davids

Nestled near St Davids, Whitesands Bay is often described as the go-to surf spot in West Wales, and for good reason. This west-facing beach catches consistent swells and, in the winter months, often produces some of the best waves in the county.

Local surfers love Whitesands for its reliable surf, easy access, and wide sandy beach backed by rugged cliffs. Even when the wind picks up, the nearby headland can offer a bit of shelter, creating clean, powerful peaks.

Winter Surfing Tip:
Whitesands performs best on an east or south-east wind, and mid-to-high tide often gives the best shape. Make sure to bring your winter wetsuit (we’d suggest at least 5/4 mm with boots, gloves, and hood), as the water can dip below 10°C.

If you’re staying at Newgale Caravan Park, Whitesands is just a short coastal drive away – perfect for a day trip filled with surf, scenery, and even a post-surf hot chocolate in St Davids.

Newgale Beach

If you’re on site with us at Newgale Coast Holiday Park, did you know you’re sitting right next to one of Wales’ longest and most iconic beaches? Which just happens to be one of the best winter surf spots around Pembrokeshire.

Stretching for almost two miles, Newgale Beach faces directly west and picks up almost any swell that rolls in. During winter, it comes alive with dramatic surf, making it a playground for experienced surfers looking for powerful beach breaks.

Just be aware that conditions can change quickly in winter; on big days, waves can get heavy and the currents may be strong.

Winter Surfing Tip:
Keep an eye on the wind. Offshore (easterly) winds create clean, glassy waves, while strong westerlies can make the surf messy. Mid-tide is usually best, and if conditions are too wild, you can always retreat back to your cosy caravan and simply watch the powerful waves roll in from the window.

Newport Sands

Heading further north toward our Newport & Dinas Caravan Parks, you’ll find Newport Sands – a vast, golden stretch of sand backed by dunes and rolling hills. It’s a fantastic all-round beach that often provides smaller, cleaner waves when the west coast is being battered by storms.

The north-facing orientation means Newport Sands is a little more protected from strong south-westerly winds, making it a great alternative for winter surfers when other beaches are blown out. Plus, there’s ample parking, a café nearby, and plenty of space to walk, paddle, or just enjoy the view if you’re not getting in the water.

Winter Surfing Tip:
Newport works best around mid-tide and can be a more forgiving option for intermediate surfers or those looking for a mellower winter session.

Most importantly, please make sure to do your own research, never go surfing alone, be aware of riptides & the weather forecast, and ensure that you do not enter the water without full knowledge of the conditions.
