Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the only National Park in the United Kingdom to be designated primary because of the spectacular nature of its coastline. Pembrokeshire’s beaches have been featured in a variety of blockbuster films in recent years including Harry Potter, Robin Hood and Snow White and the Huntsman leading Russell Crowe to say “I loved Pembrokeshire, it is fantastic, it is very much like the coastal beaches of Australia”.
Here are a few of our favourite beaches to visit when you are visiting our beautiful county:
Where else would we start than the glorious Newgale beach which sits right on the doorstep of our Newgale Caravan Site? Newgale is a three mile stretch of sand which is home to a warm country pub, a number of cafes and Newsurf where you can hire surfboards, kayaks, stand up paddleboards and body boards with the wetsuits and all the other equipment you need to have a great time. Newgale is dog friendly for most of the year with a few restricted areas in the summer months and is a great place to watch the sunset with a BBQ and a few drinks.
2. Newport Sands
Naturally our next favourite beach (and these are in no particular order…) is Newport Sands which is only a few minutes walk from our Newport Caravan Site. Newport Sands is a broad beach with plenty of sand dunes for the kids and pets to explore. The 18 Hole Newport Sands Golf Club backs on to the beach, which is again a popular choice for watersports enthusiasts or summer visitors who just want to cool off from the warm Pembrokeshire sunshine.
3. Barafundle Bay
If you are keen to explore new areas in the South of Pembrokeshire, Barafundle Bay would be a great choice. In 2004, Barafundle Bay was voted in the top 12 beaches in the world by The Good Holiday Guide which also voted it the best beach in Britain. More recently, it was voted the best picnic spot in the United Kingdom by Country Life magazine. Barafundle Bay is probably one of the more famous South Pembrokeshire beaches. It is slightly smaller than Newgale or Newport Sands but what it lacks in size, it makes up for with golden sand and crystal clear waters – often compared to beaches in the Caribbean. It is understandable why this magical spot has been voted as the Best beach in Britain many times.
4. Freshwater West
Freshwater West is considered one of the best beaches in Pembrokeshire and the UK for surfing. The south-westerly facing beach has consistent swell and strong waves which makes it one of the most reliable surfing beaches in Pembrokeshire. It has also hosted the Welsh National Surfing Championships on more than one occasion. Surfing is not your thing? How about Film Trivia? Freshwater West welcomed Danielle Radcliffe and co to the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2010 and Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett for Robin Hood that same year.
5. Broad Haven Beach
Situated about 15 minutes from our Newgale Caravan Site is Broad Haven Beach. Broad Haven offers a diverse range of attractions whether you are on your own, in a couple or with your family. There is a range of shops, restaurants and cafes and Haven Sports for watersport equipment hire. At low tide, you can walk on the beach around to the small village of Little Haven where there are even more pubs and shops to explore.
I think it is fair to say that Pembrokeshire’s beaches are sopme of the best in the world and have something to offer everyone.
